broughton street is located at the east end of
edinburgh's city centre and is packed full of busy bars, an amazing variety of
restaurants, cafés and delis and a selection of specialist shops - ranging from
edinburgh's best butcher shop to a specialist watchmaking tools shop.
the location of broughton street ( 5 minutes from princes street, 2 minutes from
st james centre) would lead the visitor to expect a street dedicated to the needs of
shoppers and tourists. what makes broughton street so different is how many people
actually live, work and play in one street.
the proximity of offices and large shops makes the area busy during the day, local
residents keep it busy on traditionally quiet weeknights and the mixture of bars,
nightclubs and restaurants ensure a lively time at weekends.
the other aspect of the area which is quite unique is the genuine cross - section
of people it attracts - young and old, office workers and artists, straight and gay
- leading to a genuinely relaxed and comfortable atmosphere |

one of the primary reasons for broughton
street's revival is the explosion of fashionable bars, restaurants and nightclubs in the
last five years. the basement and the outhouse were both listed in gq's top 50 bars in
britain, smoke stack, the tapas tree and wow are stylish but relaxed eateries and ego is a
glamorous addition to edinburgh's club scene.
if you like things a little gentler mathers, the cask and barrel and the barony are
recognised as amongst the best of edinburgh's more traditional bars.
during the day we have arguably the best butchers shop in edinburgh, crombies, a
source for all things healthy, real foods and a fantastic independent fishmonger,
something fishy. the globe deli, rapido fish bar and pizza shop, villeneuve wines and many
others ensure you'll never go hungry or thirsty when in broughton street.
completing the picture is a selection of specialist retailers such as just junk
& utilities (purveyors of weird and wonderful artefacts), joey d (purveyors of weirder
and more wonderful clothes) and shirak if you feel the need to buy an oriental rug. as a
resident i am living proof that it is possible to last several days without leaving
broughton street,!................enjoy |
